And 3 million falls annually have treatment sought at Emergency Rooms. Falls can be caused by many things, including environmental factors (such as poor lighting) and medication side effects. But, did you know that MANY FALLS are caused by balance and strength issues that are easily helped by exercise?
20% of older adults' falls result in serious injury, such as a head injury or broken bone. A broken hip fracture's average medical cost is $50,500* per patient! Furthermore, the 1-year mortality rate following a hip fracture is 22%**. In countries such as Japan, where the elderly exercise regularly, hip fractures are rare.
